Administrative history
The Department of Mass Communications was established in 1972. It brought together the relatively new Department of Journalism (established in 1967) and elements from the Department of Speech (radio and television).
John DeSanto was hired from Bemidji State to become the department's first chair.
Records consulted include the records of the President (1965-1971, 1970-1975) and a August 24, 1972 press release.
Scope and content
The Mass Communications records contain administrative records as well as material related to their departmental newsletter Sidebar.
Sidebar and other related newsletters were published mainly from 1978 to 1994, with three additional issues published in 2000 and 2001. Sidebar highlighted Mass Communications’ activities, including those of faculty, students, and alumni. The records also contain some images, mostly prints, that appeared in Sidebar.
Other significant records here are for the department’s 1981 and 1986 accreditation.
System of arrangement
The records are organized in three series. Series 1 and 2 are then in alphabetical order, while Series 3 is organized by date.
Records are located at 28B.1a-c.
